Childhood is the time that shapes us as individuals. It is when we use our experiences to shape our beliefs, how and what we learn based on our observations. Technology is now changing that. Children no longer have to observe, think, or consider. Technology is there to do that for us. We have an overwhelming amount of information readily available to us. Technology is beneficial but can also be harmful. Technology is taking away children’s imagination and the need for problem solving. Children are no longer are developing the attention required for activities such as reading which gives way to critical thinking and imagination. Children do not have to develop their memory to remember things because technology allows information to be instantaneous. In this technological world, children need to have a balance to be able to fully develop their brains to function with or without technology.
Book reading is like scuba diving in which the diver is submerged in a quiet, visually restricted, slow-paced setting with few distractions and, as a resu, is required to focus narrowly and think deeply on the limited information that is available to them.
Thinking encompasses so many aspects of who our children are and what they do, from observing, learning, remembering, questioning, and judging to innovating, arguing, deciding, and acting.
In contrast, the rise of the Internet is strengthening our ability to scan information rapidly and efficiently.
