topic that we hear so much about in today’s society is stress. Stress is a normal psychological and physical reaction to the demands of life (Mayo, 2017). Like most, we are used to living with it and don’t spend much time thinking about it. I’m confident, in my profession of nursing, stress can impact each of us, and is different for everyone. There are two major types of stress. Stress that’s beneficial and motivating-good stress and stress that causes anxiety and even heah problems-bad stress (good stress and bad stress). As humans, we must be able to recognize symptoms of stress, and we must learn how to manage it. Besides, while some stress can be positive for the maintenance of life or too much can present itself in a harmful manner; their effects can be beneficial and can also negatively impact our behavior and mood or our physical heah.
First, the effects of good stress can be beneficial to our body. We can tolerate small doses, which motivates us to work hard and perform excellent work to execute goals. Furthermore, it can boost our memory. Stress is also a vital warning system. In dangerous situations, our body triggers the fight-or-flight response that either prepares our body to stay and fight or to run. When the brain perceives stress, it produces large amounts of chemicals called epinephrine, norepinephrine, and cortisol, which then increases heart rate, breathing, and blood pressure. Plus, the senses formulate a laser-like focus so you can avoid physically stressful situations-such as jumping away from a moving car-and be safe (good stress and bad stress).
In the same way, a small amount of stress can have various heah benefits such as improve our immune system and our heah. When we have a robust immune system, we can fight off infections easier, protect our bodies from diseases and viruses, and recover from surgeries quicker. Also, researchers believe small amounts of stress can improve heart function; on the other hand, if bad stress accumulates and becomes chronic, it can cause heah problems.
Stress cannot only be beneficial but if left unchecked, bad stress can negatively impact our behavior and mood or our physical heah. However, muiple challenges daily, such as meeting deadlines, working long hours, death of a loved one, marriage or divorce, and can feel overwhelming or lose your ability to cope (Mayo, 2017). According to Stress Management, Stress symptoms may be affecting your heah, even though you might not realize it. Common effects of stress on your mood conclude; anxiety, restlessness, lack of motivation or focus, feeling overwhelmed, irritability or anger, and sadness or depression. Common effects of stress on your behavior include; overeating or undereating, angry outbursts, drug or alcohol misuse, tobacco use, social withdrawal, and exercising less often. Common effects of stress on your body include; headache, muscle tension or pain, chest pain, fatigue, change in sex drive, stomach upset, and sleep problems (Mayo, 2019). Bad stress that is left untreated can lead to hypertension, heart disease, weaken immune system, obesity, and diabetes. Also, it could cause other significant conditions and infections, such as cancer or even death. Some stress relief options conclude; exercise, heahy diet, relaxation, identify triggers, medications, and practice it regularly.
In conclusion, while some stress can be positive for the maintenance of life or too much can present itself in a harmful manner; their effects can be beneficial and can also negatively impact our behavior and mood or our physical heah. The main points are to be able to identify signs and symptoms between good and bad stress, and how we can manage both before it leads to a severe illness or even death. Because stress can be a part of our everyday life, we must find ways to reduce and sustain a heahy lifestyle. It’s essential to seek help if you can’t cope effectively.
